    Project overview

The owners were replacing a small closed kitchen with an open plan layout and an island bench, and had already chosen an induction cooktop. Their builder brought us in during planning rather than at rough-in stage.

The existing switchboard still had rewireable ceramic fuses and no spare capacity, so the first thing we did was check whether the board could carry an induction cooktop, a new oven and the additional lighting and power the layout needed. It could not. Knowing that before the cabinetry was ordered meant the switchboard work could be priced and programmed into the job rather than turning up as a surprise later.

    Scope of work

    • Reviewed the kitchen plans with the owners and cabinet maker before rough-in
    • Upgraded the switchboard, replacing rewireable fuses with circuit breakers and RCD protection
    • Installed a dedicated circuit for the induction cooktop
    • Installed dedicated circuits for the oven and dishwasher
    • Rough-in for general lighting, under cabinet lighting and pendants over the island
    • Power points set out to the cabinetry layout, including appliance cupboard power
    • Rangehood connection
    • Coordinated rough-in timing with the builder, cabinet maker and plasterer
    • Returned for final fit-off once benchtops and cabinetry were installed
    • Tested and certified on completion

    Outcome

The kitchen has the circuits it needs for the appliances that were actually chosen, rather than the ones the old wiring could handle. Power points sit where the owners use them instead of where the previous wiring happened to run.

The switchboard upgrade brought the whole property up to the required RCD protection at the same time, which the owners would have had to do eventually anyway, and it was significantly cheaper as part of the renovation than as a separate job.

Does an induction cooktop need its own circuit?

In most cases yes. Induction cooktops draw significantly more than a standard outlet can supply, so they normally need a dedicated circuit and sometimes a switchboard with the capacity to carry it. It is worth checking at the design stage rather than on installation day.

When should the electrician see the kitchen plans?
