    Project overview

The property was going on the market and the owners had been told they needed compliant safety switches before the title could transfer. The existing board was original to the house, ran on rewireable ceramic fuses and had no RCD protection at all.

There was no realistic way to retrofit safety switches into the existing board. It was physically full, the fuse carriers were long obsolete and there was nowhere to mount the devices. Replacing the board was both the compliant option and the cheaper one once the alternative was properly costed.

    Scope of work

    • Inspected the existing installation and identified every circuit
    • Removed the original rewireable fuse board
    • Installed a new switchboard with circuit breakers throughout
    • Installed RCD protection covering all power point and lighting circuits
    • Tested every circuit and confirmed correct RCD operation
    • Labelled the board clearly so each circuit can be identified
    • Checked the existing smoke alarms for age and operation
    • Issued an electrical safety certificate for the owners and their settlement agent

    Outcome

The property now has the RCD protection required in Western Australia, with every power point and lighting circuit protected, and the owners had the documentation they needed ahead of settlement.

The clearly labelled board is a small thing that makes a real difference later. The next owner can find the right circuit in a few seconds instead of switching things off one at a time to work out what is what.

How many RCDs does a Western Australian home need?

A minimum of two, and they must protect all power point and lighting circuits. More may be required depending on how many circuits the property has. They are required before a property is sold, and for rental and short-stay accommodation.

Can safety switches be added without replacing the switchboard?
