The expensive decisions are the ones made too late
The most expensive electrical decisions in a renovation are the ones made after the walls are finished. Once plaster is on, moving a power point, adding a pendant over the island bench or running a circuit for an appliance you did not plan for stops being a small job.
Bringing an electrician in during the planning stage changes the outcome. We are happy to look at plans, walk through the space with you, or talk it through with your builder or designer before anything is committed.
What early input sorts out
A conversation at design stage, before anything is ordered or closed in.
Where the lights actually go
Lighting positions and how each area is switched, worked out against how you will use the room.
Switch and power point locations
Outlets set out to the furniture and the cabinetry rather than to the old wiring.
What appliances need
Induction cooktops, ovens and rangehoods often need dedicated circuits. Better to know at design stage.
Switchboard capacity
Whether the existing board can carry what you are adding, before the cabinetry is ordered.
Whether a power upgrade is required
Checked up front so it is priced into the job rather than turning up later.
Compliance, particularly in wet areas
Bathrooms and laundries have specific requirements for where fittings can sit.
How it fits around the other trades
Rough-in and fit-off timed to the build programme rather than the other way around.
Renovation electrical work
From the first plan mark-up through to the final fit-off.
Kitchen renovations
Appliance circuits, induction cooktops, rangehoods, task lighting and pendants over the island.
Bathroom renovations
Lighting, exhaust fans, heated towel rails and power, all to the wet area requirements.
Extensions and additions
New circuits, smoke alarms, outdoor power and the switchboard capacity to carry it all.
Electrical spruce-ups
New switches, fittings and feature lighting to lift a tired house without a full renovation.
Planning and rough-in
Lighting layouts and rough-in worked out before the walls close, and timed to the build programme.
Final fit-off
Fittings, switches and testing once the cabinetry and finishes are in.
The most electrically demanding room in the house
We cover dedicated appliance circuits for ovens, cooktops and dishwashers, induction cooktop supply, rangehood connections, general and task lighting, under cabinet and feature lighting, pendant lighting over benches and islands, power points positioned around the layout rather than around the old wiring, and the switchboard work required to support the additional load.
Induction cooktops in particular catch people out, because they usually need a dedicated circuit and sometimes a switchboard upgrade. Better to know that at the design stage than on installation day. We coordinate directly with cabinet makers and benchtop installers so the rough-in matches the cabinetry.
Common trigger — Induction cooktop circuits
Coordinated with — Cabinet maker and benchtop installer
Two visits — Rough-in then final fit-off
Where water and electricity share a room
Bathrooms have specific electrical safety requirements. We handle lighting, exhaust fans and combination heat, light and fan units, heated towel rails, underfloor heating supply, shaver and vanity power points, mirror and vanity lighting, and the placement of every fitting in accordance with the wet area zones in the Wiring Rules.
Ventilation is worth thinking about properly. An undersized or badly ducted exhaust fan is one of the most common causes of mould and paint problems in a newly renovated bathroom.
Working with your other trades
We talk to everyone
Direct communication with your builder, cabinet maker, plasterer, tiler and plumber so nobody is guessing.
We work to the build sequence
Rough-in and fit-off planned around the programme rather than expecting the site to work around us.
We solve it on site
If something in the plan will not work you hear straight away, while it is still cheap to change.
We keep the site clean
Which matters more than people expect on a job where several trades share the same space.
Rough-in and fit-off
We can do either, though doing both gives the best result because we know what is in the walls.
Tested and certified
Everything tested on completion, with a safety certificate issued to you.

When should we involve an electrician in a renovation?
As early as possible, ideally during planning. Early input identifies the electrical requirements, avoids costly changes later and makes sure the power, lighting and safety provisions are designed in rather than added afterwards.

The Team on site. The person who quotes your job is the person who does it.
A small team you can actually get hold of
Lifetime Electrics is led by Jay Rawlings, with Meg alongside him across residential, commercial, renovation and maintenance work. Because the team is small, the person quoting your job is the person doing it, and you are never passed between departments for an answer.
