Residential electrical work for Perth homes

Most home electrical work falls into one of three buckets. Something has stopped working and needs fixing. Something is old and needs upgrading. Or you want to add something that was not there before. We do all three.

That might be tracking down the reason a circuit keeps tripping, replacing a tired switchboard that is running out of room, adding power points to a home office, putting LED downlights through the living areas, or wiring up a new appliance circuit for an induction cooktop. We work on homes of every age across the Perth metropolitan area. Older homes take a bit more investigation, and we would rather spend the time finding the actual cause of a problem than guess at it and have you call us back.

What we cover

Common residential services

General electrical installation

New circuits, ceiling fans, new fittings and new outlets, installed neatly and tested properly.

Lighting upgrades

LED conversions, downlights, feature and pendant lighting, outdoor and security lighting.

Power upgrades

Extra power points, dedicated appliance circuits, outdoor power and added capacity where the supply is stretched.

Switchboard upgrades

Replacing old fuse boards with a modern board that has room for the circuits and safety devices your home needs.

Smoke alarms

Supply, installation and replacement of mains powered alarms, plus checks on the alarms you already have.

RCDs and safety switches

Installation and testing so the power point and lighting circuits in your home are protected.

Fault finding and repairs

Tripping circuits, flickering lights, dead power points and the intermittent faults nobody has pinned down.

Safety and compliance

Two RCDs, minimum, on every Perth home

In Western Australia a home must have at least two residual current devices, and they must protect all power point and lighting circuits. They are required before the title transfers on a sale, and for rental and short stay properties.

Press the test button on each RCD every three months. If it does not trip, it is not protecting you.

Minimum RCDs — Two
Test interval — Every three months
Required before — Sale, lease and short stay

Lighting and power

The cheapest change you can make to a room

Lighting is the change people notice most. We handle new lighting layouts, LED conversions that cut running costs, downlights, feature and pendant lighting over benches and dining tables, outdoor and security lighting, and sensor lighting for driveways and entries.

On the power side, most homes we visit are short on outlets. We add power points where you actually need them, run dedicated circuits for ovens, cooktops and air conditioning, and put power and lighting into sheds and alfresco areas. If you are adding a significant load, we check the switchboard and the incoming supply first rather than assuming there is capacity.

Switchboards

When a switchboard upgrade is worth considering

We will look at what you have, explain what it would take to bring it up to standard and give you a clear price. If it does not need replacing, we will tell you that too.

Rewireable ceramic fuses

The board still runs on the old ceramic fuse carriers rather than circuit breakers.

Circuits tripping for no obvious reason

Nuisance tripping is usually a symptom of something, not a quirk to live with.

No space left

There is physically nowhere to add circuits or safety switches to the existing board.

Missing RCD protection

The home does not have the two safety switches Western Australia requires.

You are renovating or adding rooms

New circuits and appliances place more demand on the existing installation.

Damage or scorching

Heat marks, damaged fittings or a board that has been added to repeatedly over the years.

Do you install smoke alarms?

Yes. We install and replace mains powered smoke alarms in homes and can advise on the number, location and type of alarms required. We can also check your existing alarms to confirm they are working, are not past their ten year life and meet the requirements that apply when a property is sold, rented or hired out.
